Digital FABRICATION - "SToL"

The STōL, designed to function as both a table and stool, consists of two cast cement bases and 25mm diameter galvanised steel pipes. By employing heavy cement bases and kinked pipes the STōL appears to do the impossible, suspending the cement bases easily with little need for support and easily transitioning between uses on the round backs of the pipes.

The seat and table bases were designed parametrically in Grasshopper and cast in gypsum cement moulds formed by CNC milling and vacuum forming. The galvanised steel rods were bent and shaped using a hydraulic pipe bender.

Structural analysis was performed in Karamba and allowed the design to be refined to ensure that not only were the bases adequately supported but that an optimal amount of counter support and balance was provided.
